A Day In The Life

有名なビートルズ・ナンバー。1998年、ジョージ・マーチンのプロデュース業引退を記念して作られた、複数のアーチストによるトリビュート・アルバムに収録されたものがジェフの演奏としてはオリジナル。『Blow By Blow』全体と『Wired』の一部をジョージがプロデュースしたのが縁で、ジェフも参加した。選曲はジェフ自身だという。グラミー賞にもノミネートされるほど評価が高かったが、その年に『Supernatural』が奇跡的な大ヒットを記録したサンタナに阻まれて受賞は逃した。1999年ツアー以降、ステージでは頻繁にプレイしている。なお、ギター・プレイヤーによるインストルメンタル版のカバーでは、ウェス・モンゴメリーのバージョンも名高い。
Famous Beatles tune. Jeff's original version is included in "In My Life" by various artists, a tribute album to George Martin who retired as the producer. Jeff appeared as one of the guests on this album, because George had produced "Blow By Blow" and some parts on "Wired". It was Jeff who chose this tune to play for this project. It was a wonderful recording, so that the song was nominated for Grammy's. But Santana, with best selling album "Supernatural", took the awards away. Jeff has been playing this song on the stage after 1999 tour. Some of the cover versions by the instrumentalist exist, the most famous one is by Wes Montgomery.

この曲の終わりはどこなのか。アルバムに表記されたタイム・カウントから考えるとスロー・パート後のドラム・フィル直前のように思える。しかし、コンサートではスロー・パートが「Scatterbrain」の一部として演奏されている。 スロー・パートが始まったらこの曲は終わりと考えていいのではないだろうか。どうでもよいが。
Where is the ending point of this tune? Considering from the time count from the liner notes, it must be the slow part before the drum fill. But in concert, slow part is performed as a part of "Scatterbrain". Maybe we should think it's over when the slow part starts.

邦題「恋にしびれて」。エルビス・プレスリーの有名曲のカバー。ロッドの提案でプレイすることになった。オリジナルとは似ても似つかないアレンジが施されている。スライド・バーでピックアップ上をこするのは、しばしばジェフが好んで使うテクニックだ。
Cover version of the famous number of Elvis Presley. It was Rod who insisted to play this song. Scratching his bottleneck above the pickups is the action that he still does on the stages.
Ambitious

アルバム『Flash』は、プロデュース・クレジットが曲ごとに違うが、この曲はナイル・ロジャース。つまり初期段階での録音と判断できる。ボーカルはジミー・ホール。2枚目のシングルにも選ばれ、プロモーション・ビデオも制作された。ボーカリストのオーディションを行い、最終的にジミー・ホール本人が登場する内容だった。1986年のツアーでは「ビデオを見ただろう」とジミーが紹介していた。のちのインタビューでジェフはアルバム『Flash』を「駄作」と発言したが、この曲は好きな一曲だったとも述べている。
Many kinds of producing credits are found on the cover of "Flash". This number was produced by Nile Rodgers. So this must be recorded in early stage of the recordings. Jimmy Hall sings. Selected as second single from the album. Also the promotion video was produced. During the 1986 Tour, Jimmy introduced this tune, saying "Hope you saw the video".

インストルメンタル。ボトルネック・プレイが聴ける。制作過程では「La Veranese」、あるいはのちに「Angel's Strut」とも呼ばれていた。1995年ツアーで演奏されていた唯一の新曲「Hurricane」はこの曲の原型にあたると言われているが、定かではない。1999年ツアーの一部では、この曲のみテレキャスターを使ってプレイされた。
Instrumental. Uses bottleneck. Before the release, it was called "La Veranese", or "Angel's Strut". "Hurricane", played during 1995 tour, was said to be the prototype of this song, though it's unconfirmed. On 1999 tour, sometimes played with Telecaster.

LP未収録、CDのみに収録された。後に『Beckology』にも収められた。カレン・ローレンスなる女性ボーカリストが歌う。複数のリード・ギターをオーバー・ダブしている。
Not included in LP, heard only on CD. Later selected to be in "Beckology". A female vocalist, Karen Lawrence sings.
Beck's Bolero

邦題「ベックのボレロ」。ジェフとジミーが、「俺が作曲した」と主張し合ったインストルメンタル。この2人以外に、キース・ムーン、ジョン・ポール・ジョーンズ、ニッキー・ホプキンスが参加した歴史的なレコーディングだ。このメンバーにスティーブ・マリオットを加えて結成する予定だったバンド名は「レッド・ツェッペリン」だった。モノラル・バージョンは、ステレオ・バージョンと違い、最後にサウンド・エフェクトが入る。曲中間部に聞こえる叫び声はキース・ムーンによるもの。なお、このセッションでは他に数曲アウトテイクがある。おそらく有名曲をジャムった程度のものだろう。2005年のリマスター盤『Truth』のボーナスに「モノ・シングル・バージョン・ウィズ・バックワーズ・ギター」バージョンが収録された。
Instrumental number that both Jeff and Jimmy insisted "I composed". With these two guitarist, Keith Moon,John Paul Jones, Nicky Hopkins recorded this tune. They planned to organize a band with Steve Mariott. The name of the band was also planned as "Led Zeppelin". It is Keith Moon that screams in the middle part of the song. Monoral version includes short sound effect at the end of the track. Some outtakes exist. Almost of the "Truth" album were recorded in 1968, but this number was recorded in late 1966 or 1967. First released as B-side of the single "Hi Ho Silver Lining". 2005 remastered version of "Truth" includes "Mono Single version with backwards guitar" version.

Blackbird

インストルメンタル。古いブルーズマンがそうしたように、スライド・バーの代わりにナイフを使って鳥の鳴き声を発している。アルバム・リリース直後のツアーではオープニングにこの曲のテープを流していた。
Instrumental. Like the old blues guitar player did, Jeff used knife instead of slide-bar to make a sound of singing birds. On 2000 Japanese tour, this was the introduction SE to the show.
Black Cat Moan

邦題「蒼き風」。作曲者のヤン・ハマーがキーボードとドラムスを多重録音している。コンサートでも多く演奏されるジェフの代表曲の一つ。途中に「The Train Kept A-Rollin'」をはさんでプレイされたバージョンは「With The Jan Hammer Group Live」に収録されている。
Jan Hammer composed. And played keyboards and drums. Jeff often plays this number on the stage. One of the popular tunes by Jeff. The version that includes "The Train Kept A-Rollin'" in between is on "With The Jan Hammer Group Live" album.

Instrumental. Bulgarian traditional. Jeff had always praised Bulgarian women harmony, and at last he recorded it on his record. He played a Strato that has autograph by Anoushka Shankar on its body.
Cause We've Ended As Lovers

邦題「哀しみの恋人達」。スティービー・ワンダーがジェフにプレゼントした曲。彼の別れた妻、シリータのセカンド・アルバム、『Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta』にボーカル・バージョンが収録されている。そのためか、ジェフはこの曲を「Syreeta」と呼んでいるらしい。ベック・ボガート＆アピス時代に、スティービーが「Superstition」をジェフたちにプレゼントしてくれる約束をした。ところがモータウンは、「先にスティービー名義のシングルを発売してくれないと困る」と警告。やむなく発売したシングルが全米トップに。これにジェフが腹を立てた。その件に対するスティービーの謝罪の意味もあってのプレゼントだった。ジャケット裏には、「ロイ・ブキャナンに捧ぐ、そしてスティービーに感謝する - JB 」とある。ロイは、当時のジェフお気に入りのギタリストの一人だった。ロイはこれに対するお返しとして、『Street Called Straight』に「My Friend Jeff」なる曲を収録した。イントロは前後のピックアップをハムバッキングに改造したテレキャスターでプレイしている。また1970年代から1980年代にかけてステージでこの曲をプレイするときには前述のテレキャスターを使っていた。ジェフへのトリビュート・アルバム『Jeffology』でフィル・コリンがカバーしている。
Stevie Wonder presented this tune to Jeff. Vocalized version is included in Syreeta's album, "Stevie Wonder Presents Syreeta". Syreeta had been once Stevie's wife. In Beck, Bogert & Appice days, Stevie promised to give Jeff a song "Superstition". But Motown warned that at first the single record must be released as Stevie's, not under a name of Jeff. Unwillingly, Stevie decided to release a song under his name. Then the song was ranked at the top of the hit charts. Jeff got angry with this happening. Stevie apologized Jeff giving this instrumental number. On the back cover of "Blow By Blow", Jeff's message is found, "Dedicated to Roy Buchanan and thanks to Stevie - J.B.". Roy was one of Jeff's favorite guitarists in those days. Roy answered to this, featuring "My Friend Jeff" in his album "Street Called Straight". On the tribute album for Jeff, "Jeffology", Phil Collen played this number.

邦題「幻の10年」。ヤードバーズ時代のシングル。ジミー・ペイジとのダブル・リード・ギターでプレイした二曲のうちの一つ。ジェフへのトリビュート・アルバム 『Jeffology』で、ミック・マーズがプレイしている。かつては版権問題のため、めったに編集盤に収録されなかった。そのため、これを含むアナログ編集盤はいまだに中古レコード店の壁に、レコードの値段とは思えないような数字が書かれた値札とともに飾られていることが多い。
Yardbirds' single. One of two songs that Jeff and Jimmy Page played guitar together. On the tribute album for Jeff "Jeffology", Mick Mars played this number. Once, with a matter of copyright, this song had been rarely contained in compilation albums. So still now, old analog compilations including this number is displayed on the wall of old record shops, with a price card that unbelievable figure is written.

Yardbirds' single, first one with Jeff. To record this number, Sitar player from India was invited. But he couldn't understand the rhythm they were playing. So Jeff played a riff with his guitar instead. On the tribute album for Jeff "Jeffology", Paul Gilbert played this number.

Impressions' famous hit, composed by Curtis Mayfield. First released as single, at the same time as "Flash" release. Promotion video was also filmed, it was often on air. The performance with Rod Stewart was the news, and they went together on Rod's tour. But it continued only a week. They were parted because of the quarrel, again. Jeff seems to love this song. He had been playing this number in Beck, Bogert & Appice days, and at the ARMS concert, featuring Andy Fairweather Low on vocal. On 1989 and 1995 "no vocal" tour, played as an instrumental number. On the tribute album for Jeff, "Jeffology", George Lynch played this number.

In "If I Had Possession On A Judgement Day", Robert Johnson plays this riff. Jeff re-arranged the number modeling on Baby Face Reloy's version. Only one vocalized tune in "You Had It Coming". Imogen Heap sings. Jeff had been playing this number in the second term of 1999 tour, as an instrumental tune. Too many musicians plays this song. Cream's version in "Fresh Cream", "Live Cream" is popular.

Instrumental. Recorded live during German tour. Long tune over 7 minutes. Here and there, we can hear some voices. Those are by Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders. They intended to keep this a secret, with no credits on the album cover. In return for that, Jeff appeared on The Pretenders' album "Viva El Amor!". On 1999 tour, main phrase of "Beck's Bolero" was played in the middle part.

Original song was included in "Spectrum", a 1973 album by Billy Cobham. This album is also known with Jan Hammer's great work, who plays an important role on the almost all the tracks. Jeff started playing this song after the 2004 reunion tour with Jan Hammer.

邦題「迷信」。モータウンのとった方法にジェフが腹を立てたことで有名な曲。ジェフのインタビューによれば、そもそもリフが生まれる瞬間にスティービーとジェフは同じスタジオにいたらしい。スティービーがクラビネットを弾いたベック、ボガート・アンド・アピスのバージョンもあった模様。ベック、ボガート・アンド・アピス時代のヒット曲となり、後のソロ時代にもときおりボイス・モジュレーターをボーカル代わりにして演奏していた。2009年のロックンロール名誉の殿堂25周年記念コンサートでスティービー・ワンダーのセットにジェフがゲスト参加し、この曲を公共の場所で初めて共にプレイした。ちなみに、「Superstition」が生まれる前、ジェフがスティービーのマテリアルのいくつかを耳にして、「プレイしたい」と言っていたのは、「Maybe Your Baby」だった。これは「Superstition」、ジェフ参加の「Lookin' For Another Pure Love」と同様に、スティービーの『Talking Book』に収録されている。
Stevie Wonder gave this tune to Jeff. But Motown forced Stevie to release this as Stevie's single. It became best selling record. In 2009, Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame 25th anniversary concert was held. In that show, Jeff appeared as a guest during Stevie's set, played this song together in public for the first time. There was another take that Stevie played with. Stevie's version is included in the album "Talking Book".

You Shook Me

ジェフが『Truth』をリリースするのとほぼ同時に、レッド・ツェッペリンがデビュー。お互いのアルバムにこの曲が収録されていた。しかもアレンジのコンセプトがお互いに似すぎていた。先に録音を行ったジェフは、録音中にジミー・ペイジがスタジオに遊びに来ていたことを思い出しつつ、「ジミーがマネをした」と非難した。2005年のリマスター盤『Truth』のボーナスに「テイク1」が収録された。
Jeff's "Truth" and Jimmy Page's "Led Zeppelin" were released in the same days. Both of them included this song. The style of playing was also similar. Jeff recorded this a little earlier. During the sessions, Jimmy visited Jeff's studios. So Jeff told that Jimmy imitated his arrangements. 2005 remastered version of "Truth" includes "Take 1".
