1970 : Motown Sessions

第2期ジェフ・ベック・グループ結成直前に、ミッキー・モストとともにモータウンのミュージシャンを起用した録音を行った。フォー・トップスの「Reach Out I'll Be There」や テンプテーションズの「I'm Losing You」 、後に「I Got To Have A Song」として「Jeff Beck Group」で録音するスティービー・ワンダーの 「Show Me Where There's Music」も含まれていた。テープはミッキー・モストが保管していると言われている。

Right before the second Jeff Beck Group, Jeff went to Motown with Mickie Most. Made some recordings with Motown musicians. Tapes are including "Reach Out I'll Be There" (Four tops), "I'm Losing You" (Temptations). Also "Show Me Where There's Music" (Stevie Wonder), which was later released in "Jeff Beck Group" as "I Got To Have A Song", was recorded. Materials are in the hands of Mickie Most.

アレックス・リガートウッドが参加していたのはグループ結成当時のみで、メンバーが全員揃うころにはボブ・テンチが参加していた。『Rough And Ready』と 『Jeff Beck Group』を録音したメンバー。コージーはジェフが発掘した。その後クライブが知り合いのつてで参加し、クライブの紹介でボブとマックスが加入した。ブッカーT. & MG'Sのギタリスト、スティーブ・クロッパーが2作目をプロデュース。グループ解散後は、ボブとクライブが中心となってハミングバードを結成。コージーは、脱退後、ベッドラムを経てレインボウへ参加。その後多くのバンドに参加するが、1998年4月5日に交通事故で死亡する。初代ボーカリストのアレックスはのちにサンタナに参加する。

Alex Ligertwood left the group in the early days. Jeff found Cozy Powell at first. Then Clive joined, and he introduced Bob Tench and Max Middleton to the group. Recorded "Rough And Ready" and "Jeff Beck Group". Steve Cropper, the guitarist of Booker T.& the MG's, produced their second album. After the group was broken, Bob Tench organized a band Hummingbird. Cozy later joined Bedlam, then became famous with Rainbow and some hard rock bands. He was killed in a car crash in 1998.

第二期ジェフ・ベック・グループが順調に活動している間も、ジェフはグループ結成に向けてティム、カーマインとときおり連絡をとっていた模様。バニラ・ファッジ以後、カクタスを経た彼らとようやく合流。念願のリズム・セクションを手に入れた。キムはほんの数回のギグでクビになり、ボブ・テンチを呼び戻すが、その後ボブとともにマックスをも追い出すことになる。このユニットでアメリカを短期間ツアーしている。

Jeff first wanted Rod Stewart for this band, but Rod refused. Kim has soon been fired. Vanilla Fudge, Cactus rhythm sections had joined as Jeff's ideal men. John Bonham, Led Zeppelin drummer, let Jeff to listen to Vanilla Fudge, on that time he had been interested in them.

スタジオ・アルバムを1枚、日本でのライブ・レコードを1枚残して、意外にも短期間で分裂した。スタジオ盤ではザ・ボーイズと、ドン・ニックスがプロデュース。ザ・ボーイズとはメンバー三人の連名。セカンド・アルバムはレコーディングまで終わっていたものの、ジェフがそれに意味を見いだせずにリリースされなかった。レインボウ・シアターで行われた最終コンサートのライブ・アルバム化も検討されたが、実現せず。のちに『Beckology』でメドレー一曲が収録されるに終わる。ジェフ単独の行動としては、1973年7月3日、ロンドンのハマースミス・オデオンで行われたデビッド・ボウイのコンサートに出演。TV放映用のフィルムまで制作するものの、ジェフは自分の写っているパートをカットすることをスタッフに要請した。自分が映像化されるのがイヤだ、というのが理由だったらしい。

Just like it was scheduled, the trio days had started. In these days, Stevie Wonder promised to give them a new song "Superstition". It was planned to be released as Beck, Bogert & Appice's single first. But Motown forced Stevie to release it first. And his version was ranked at the top of the hit charts. Jeff got anger. So Stevie apologized Jeff, and wrote "Cause We've Ended As Lovers" and "Thelonius" for Jeff's new album. Studio recording was produced by The Boys and Don Nix. "The Boys" means Jeff, Tim & Carmine. On July, 3rd, 1973, Jeff played on the stage of David Bowie. It was filmed for TV show. But Jeff claimed to cut out his part.

若いスタジオ・ミュージシャンを起用。なお、このアルバムは、ビートルズのプロデューサーとして有名なジョージ・マーティンがプロデュースを担当している。ここでの縁があってか、ジェフは1998年のジョージ・マーチンの引退記念アルバム『In My Life』に多くのミュージシャンとともに参加している。

Funk band from England, Gonzarez members with Max Middleton. This album was produced by George Martin, famous with The Beatles' producer. He also arranged strings. On 1998, Jeff played on the album "In My Life", that was tribute to Martin.

アルバム録音時のリズム・セクションを起用せず。マックス以外の二名は、当時スタジオ・ミュージシャンとして有名だった。アルバムとは違った角度でファンクを求めた人選といえる。

Jeff went out touring with some studio musicians, instead of the players those recorded the album.

曲により、メンバーが入れ替わる。ヤン・ハマーとの親交がスタートしたのはこの頃。前作同様にジョージ・マーチンが数曲をプロデュースするが、プロジェクト途中でジェフと意見が合わなくなって撤退する。

Collaboration with Jan Hammer has started in those days. George Martin was producing the album in the beginning, but he quitted midway. Jan Hammer produced the rest.

ライブ・アルバム『With The Jan Hammer Group Live』を録音したメンバー。ヤン・ハマー・グループにジェフが客演する形だったが、実質的にはジェフのバック・バンドのような役割に近かった。エアロスミスのサポーティング・アクトとしてのツアーも行った。コンサートにはときおりジョン・マクラフリンが飛び入りした。ジョンはエレクトリック期以降のマイルス・デイビスとの演奏、『In A Silent Way』や『Bitches Brew』が有名。その後、自己のバンド、マハビシュヌ・オーケストラを経て、徐々にソロ寄りの活動が多くなる。

They recorded the live album "With The Jan Hammer Group Live". Sometimes, John McLaughlin joined in at concerts. He was known as one of the Miles Davis' musicians, played on "In A Silent Way", "Bitches Brew". After he left Miles' combo, organized his own band, Mahavishnu Orchestra.

プロモートすべきアルバムなしのツアー。とはいえ、スタンリー・クラークとのツアーは話題を呼んだ。ジェフが1975年のツアーでスタンリーの「Power」をプレイしていたことから親交がスタートした。このあと『There And Back』で活躍するサイモン・フィリップスとトニー・ハイマスは、二人の派手な楽器バトルのかげにひそんでいるだけだった。

Tour without any album to promote. Collaboration with Stanley Clarke was a topic. They became close since Jeff played Stanley's tune "Power" during his 1975 tour.
